I wouldn’t worry about us losing any focus. We got focus to burn, baby.
I feel silly making some of these comments about a SpongeBob movie, but I don’t really know how else to talk about it. Even if this is your introduction to SpongeBob you’ll be able to understand most of the dynamic between characters, because they’re developed really well in just 90 minutes. I was very impressed by that. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t laugh out loud a few times throughout the movie, because these characters are just plain hilarious. This type of animation is new to the franchise (as far as i know), but it’s pretty high quality and original looking. Between that and the solid soundtrack (shoutout to Weezer), it makes for an aesthetically pleasing experience overall.
Having said all that, it wasn’t perfect. A lot of the live action and cameos were over the top, which made the story drag. The plot lines get messy with all the extra scenes, but it doesn’t ruin anything. Other than being a little cheesy, this is a funny, heartwarming family film that will remind you why SpongeBob is a beloved icon.
